I’ve said it time and time again, I’m totally a salty snack kind of person. Even around the holidays. I love Christmas cookies but I would still pick something crunchy and salty over them.
Anybody out there with me? Even if you’re all about the cookies, this Spicy Chex Mix is a great addition to your holiday treats. It breaks up the sweetness and is great to have around for snacking.
The Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make Spicy Chex Mix:
If you prefer corn or wheat Chex cereal, you can definitely substitute them instead of the rice version.
When it comes to the pretzels you have some options too. I used pretzels rings because I had some leftover from when I made that glorious Easy Christmas Dessert Board.
You can use the mini twist, mini sticks, holiday shapes or rings. As long as they are on the smaller size, they will work wonderfully.
If almonds aren’t your favorite, you can definitely substitute them for something else. Cashews, walnuts or pecans would all be tasty options. You could even grab a can of mixed nuts to add lots of variety.
Making Spicy Chex Mix – It Couldn’t Get Easier!
Mix together the cereal, pretzels and almonds in a large bowl and set aside. You’ll also want to preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Once it’s melted, add the hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper. Let it simmer for a minute and it’s ready to go.
Drizzle the delicious buffalo sauce over the cereal mixture and carefully toss until every last bit is covered.
Spread it in an even layer on a rimmed baking sheet. It’s really important that every bit is touching the sheet to ensure maximum crunchiness so you may need to use two baking sheets.
Into the oven it goes for about 55 minutes. You’ll want to stir it around every 15 minutes to make sure everything gets crispy and delicious.
Once it’s done, allow it to cool on the baking sheet and store it on the counter in an airtight container. If stored correctly, it will keep for 4 to 6 weeks. Not that it will last that long.
So Many Uses
This delicious, spicy treat could pass for a lot of things this holiday season. First and obviously, the snack.
Put out a great big bowl of this buffalo inspired snack mix at parties and it’s sure to disappear. It’s the perfect mix of spicy, salty, rich and crunchy.
You could also bring it to add as an appetizer option at a party or dinner with friends. Nobody is going to say no.
It also makes a great little gift for friends or neighbors. Package it in a festive cellophane bag and tie with pretty ribbon for an easy and delicious homemade gift.
I really like the idea of giving something savory this time of year since we’re all bombarded with cookies and fudge and sweets of all kinds.
